themes

Overcoming obstacles is one of the themes highlighted in chapters 1-6. Beka was not always an intelligent girl. Although winning the contest gave Beka some sought of greif she was still grieving for toycie in a silent way. Beka felt some sought of hope since she won the contest. Death was also another theme highlighted. Toycie was never given a proper wake so Beka in a some little way grieved for toycie. She remembered all the fun times she and toycie had on weekends. She recalled visiting all the wealthy communities with her and going to the water front. Although Beka was sad she still tried to find comfort in her memories. Toycie remained a oart of Beka's life. Also the pola bear represented poverty oin belize. The village very swampy, stale, dirty, noisey and very unpleasantr. Beka also realized change in her life., She stopped lying. Beka also began maturing as she was interested in politics.

  1. The polar bear didn't represent poverty instead it represented death in Belize and it coincides with the point of brain drain as so many people were leaving Belize it shows that things in Belize were not prosperous as Foreigners (the polar) came to Belize and died and Belizians were leaving Belize and were going to the mother country (England) and prospering.

  2. I agree when you talk about overcoming obstacles because Beka is faced with an obstacle in her life, and that obstacle is her fear of failure(depicted in her dream). She does not want to fail her exam because she wants to show her family that she is capable of passing and that she is maturing.

  3. I think you made a mistake Kaydeen by saying when Beka won the contest she was still in grief what you meant to say was success was the little bit of hope hope when she was still grieving for the death of Toycie, and this little success in a way helping her put the pieces of her life in order again. Agreeing with Arielle the polar bear doesn't represent proverty it represents stagnation, that nothing last in Belize or is successful or prosperous i.e when the Belizean doctor left his homeland to go to the colonisers (England) for a better future resulting in the brain drain in the Belizean society
