Themes and Techniques in Beka Lamb

Beka is a young Creole girl who lives in Belize and is going through a phase of change and maturity. The techniques used in the first six chapters of the book were those of the dream symbol and flashback. This story began with the success of Beka and her change from a flat-rate Belize Creole to a person of high mind. The atmosphere was described completely different: unsanitary and depressing. Further down the theme of politics came in ‘play’new characters were met every chapter whether it be minor or major.
In chapter two Beka had a dream that symbolized what was going on in Beka’s mind. Since Toyice her dearest friend had died, she couldn’t bear the grief until she won the contest distracting her from the pain but in the dream Beka was on a bridge and couldn’t cross. The bridge represented the obstacles in her life in which she needed help when no one was around to help her. Even tough the success was one hurdle done she still had many more to go and would need help. Symbols used in the dream.
Death was a theme occurred through out the chapters. In chapter 3 the polar bear that Gran Ivy mentioned using the flashback technique was a symbol for death besides the death of Toyice. Flashbacks were the major technique used by many of the characters but especially for Beka. Beka’s the main character used the flash back technique continuously. In chapter 3 she was telling of her remembrance with Toyice and the walks they had. While in chapters four and five also told using the flashback technique was before her change and maturity when she failed her exams and lied about it to her parents and then decided to change which was a sign/symbol of Beka maturing. She wanted to make the change and was so willing she begged her father to go back to school and was determines to make the change.
Chapter six was told in the flashback technique and the theme, which outstood, was politics-curltural, racial and social. Beka and Toyice spoke of politics; mainly of the Spanish and which Britain inherited the rights through. This came about when Toyice received a guitar from an English family and both she and Beka discovered it was from Spain and decided to scratch it off and renamed it with the name of their own country Belize in hope one day the country would be able to create something as great as the beautiful guitar.
