Major themes discussed in Beka Lamb

We see in Beka Lamb that one of the major themes discussed in Chapter one is death. This plays a significant role in the novel as Toycie's horrific end sends shock waves throughout the community. While the death of Toycie causes grief and sorrow,it also reminds the villagers of the fragility of lfe and the secrets that can torment and consume an individual. This is also shown with the slapping of mosquitos."The insistent grumblings of frogs and the nervous continuous shrilling of every cricket"suggest that everything isn't really right.Death is also depicted when they brought a polar bear to belize and it died showing that nothing prospers in Belize and all it brings is death.Racialism is also present in,we see this when Beka's mom told her that she didnt want her conversing with that half-crazy coolie woman referring to Vellor.Another example of race and descrimination is in Beka's dream,a technique used by the Zee Edgell when the crowd shouts"Jump nigger gial, jump! The dream also shows that Beka was trying to move on but something was in her way because she was unable to cross the bridge which shows the theme 'overcoming obstacles.Poverty s also depicted in chapter three when the writer speaks about the rusty zinc rooftops of the town.In chapter one it is shown that education raises your status from being a flat rate Belize creole to a person of high mind.It is also shown that success deminishes grief and pain when Beka passed the test.Lastly,we see that Brka is interested in politics. This also shows maturity because she is concerned about what is going on in her country.
