Aronne's View on the first 6 chapters

One of the other main themes in Beka Lamb was friendship between her and Toycie, her deceased friend. Even though they were close, they had problems in their relationship. They went to walks together on evenings promenading through the streets in their finest clothes. They walked with Beka's younger brothers Chuku and Zandy and sometimes with Emilio, Toycie's boyfriend, who later on intruded in their friendship. Normally on their walks they would take turns on what street they would promenade on. They always did things together, even though Toycie was older than Beka. They conversed with each other properly because Toycie had a childlike image in herself whereas Beka was developing into maturity.
Beka and her parents had a close relationship for example Beka and her father was having a conversation about politics and Beka was contradicting her father. The conversation was informal and friendly and Beka was not uneasy around her father. She was also friendly with her mother even though they had different views about their Belizean culture. As we see in Chapter two Beka was helping her mother change her headclothe for her headache. Miss Ivy, also known as Gran Ivy, was Beka's paternal grandmother. She also had a close relationship with Beka. She was very proud of Beka for winning the essay contest. When Miss Eila exclaimed that if it had a music contest Toycie whom was deceased would have won, but Miss Ivy retorted in saying,' It was only the essay contest, Eila'. Miss Ivy wanted Beka in the spotlight.
One theme I noticed in chapter three which was brief was race and ethnicity. There were different races in Belize all coming from the major continents around the world. In the community, the members would together, like a brotherhood, but i realized that even though they worked together, there are still some race discrimination between them.

  1. I had not thought of friendship as a theme, but it is true. The essence of their friendhsip, where Toycie is three years older than Beka,is one where either is accepted for who they are.But their tightly knit friendship is often interferred with by Toycie's boyfriend Emilio. He represents an obstacle in their 'perfect' friendship.

  2. I fully agree with your views on some of the themes present and as Thais said, Friendship really is an important theme. However one correction, Beka was not contradicting her father but instead she was highlighting how her father was contradicting himself. He said not to accept financial help from Guatemala to start the new political party yet he himself was trading with them.

  3. I agree with Thais. I too did not think of friendship as one of the themes, but the points established about Beka's and Toycie's relationship were very well made. The reference to Emilio was also one I had not considered. You made a very good attempt at expressing your themes, but I would take heed to Calisha's point on your error. I also agree with the point made on the Belizean people; the way they come together to assist others in need, but in that case i would have made a reference to the statement made by Beka's great-grandmother. the people can help you, but they can't sleep for you.

  4. I taught that you could've mentioned atleast one more theme Aronne and as the others said,i don't think that friendship is really a theme but however it was well expressed, one of the major themes you failed to mention was that of death and i think it was very important.
